I-76/120th Avenue Interchange
Phase 2
Submitted by: Edward Kraemer
& Sons Inc.
The $19.2 million I-76/120th Avenue Interchange, Phase 2
project consisted of the demolition of four existing concrete
bridge structures and one concrete box culvert and replacing
them with five new precast concrete girder bridge structures,
as well as one new concrete box culvert comprised of more
than10,000 cu. yds. of concrete and over two million pounds
of reinforcing steel.
In addition to Edward Kraemer & Sons' self-performed
structures work, the project also involved subcontracted work
to raise the grade and widen 2.4 miles of the I-76 roadway,
including 173,722 cu. yds. of embankment material and 130,590
sq. yds. of concrete paving. Also included as a part of the
I-76 upgrades were new signs, guardrails, traffic safety devices,
drainage, shoulder and finish grading work and reestablishment
of wetland areas and landscaping.
Other improvements included elimination of an outdated and
heavily congested traffic circle at the intersection of Colorado
State Highway 2 (Sable Blvd.) and 120th Ave. and replacing
it with a multi-lane signalized intersection.
Improvements to Sable Blvd. and 120th Avenue included 347,257
cu. yds. of embankment material 29,680 sq. yds. of concrete
paving and 16,000 tons of asphalt paving to both raise the
grade and widen a total of 1.6 miles of the Sable and 120th
Avenue roadways. Also included were new signs, guardrails,
traffic safety devices, lighting, drainage, shoulder and finish
grading work and landscaping.
The 120th Ave. and Sable Blvd. roadways were completed within
the first year of construction. All eastbound I-76 work was
completed by the end of 2001 and overall the project was completed
in September 2002, four months ahead of the original schedule.
