Wenk Receives ASLA Award

The American Society of Landscape Architects recently named Denver-based Wenk Associates Inc. as the recipient of an ASLA 2003 Professional Award.

"A Vision for the Menomonee River Valley," a plan for redevelopment and revitalization, received an ASLA 2003 Analysis & Planning Merit Award. ASLA Professional Awards recognize the best in landscape architecture projects.

The Menomonee Valley was once a key industrial hub in the center of Milwaukee that employed 50,000 workers. The two-and-a-half mile-long, 750-acre study area encompasses abandoned rail yards, derelict industrial buildings and outmoded infrastructure that lines the channelized and degraded river.

The purpose of two closely linked studies was to create a plan for redevelopment and economic revitalization that incorporates sites for new industrial, commercial, office and residential development to create 7,000 new jobs while providing major new parks and trails for the city.

M+O+A Announces New Projects

M+O+A Architectural Partnership has been awarded two new projects.

o M+O+A was selected to master plan and design a new campus for the Denver Seminary, an internationally recognized post-graduate theological seminary that has outgrown its current campus in Denver.

The new educational campus in Littleton will initially include a chapel, classrooms, administration, library, student services, counseling center and student housing in a complex of seven buildings, with planned expansion to a total of 10 buildings. The educational component of the project is planned on 10 acres, and 90 units of student housing will be built on an additional five acres immediately adjacent to the educational campus.

o Denver Public Schools selected M+O+A to design its new K-8 school, serving the Stapleton community. The school capacity is targeted for 750 students and will include early childhood education. Programmed at approximately 100,000 sq ft over two floors, the school will be designed for an "urban" context and incorporate sustainable design and energy conservation strategies, including extensive daylighting; sustainable construction materials, assemblies and processes; and a geothermal heat pump system to provide heating and cooling at much higher efficiency than other systems.

Coordination with the Colorado State Engineers Office and the U.S. Forest Service will be necessary for approval of construction.

The project is a continuation of services provided to the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District by Stantec on projects at Black Lake No. 1, including the original design of the zoned-earth dam, an emergency preparedness plan and the design of Piezometers needed to measure ground water levels within the dam.
