Arber Receives National Finalist
Award For Second Consecutive Year
The Lake Mead Membrane Water Treatment Plant received a National
Finalist Award in the Engineering Excellence Competition sponsored
by the American Council of Engineering Companies. The competition
took place in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Consulting
Congress Day.
This is the second consecutive year that Richard P. Arber
Associates has been honored with the award. In the 2002 competition,
the Aurora Water Recycling Plant Project received a Finalist
Award.
The new membrane water treatment plant at Lake Mead is one
of the first facilities in the United States to use a dual
membrane system to purify drinking water. The combination
of microfiltration and nanofiltration allows passage of desired
minerals with high rejection of organic compounds. State-of-the-art
technology designed into the plant includes nanofiltration
membranes, ultraviolet disinfection and membrane clean-in-place
systems.
One of the unique aspects of the project was the reuse of
the membrane reject stream water.
This water is blended with raw water to irrigate native trees
and shrubs.
ACEC also presented Mark Beebe,
PE, of Richard P. Arber Associates with a New Face in Engineering
Award as part of National Engineers Week. The New Faces of
Engineering program recognizes 109 nominees out of 1.8 million
engineers in the United States.
The program is designed to boost public awareness of the
newest generation of engineers.
Beebe was one of the top three young engineers in the United
States to be nominated by ACEC.
To qualify, engineers had to have worked on unique or high-profile
projects and/or engineering achievements during the last two
to five years. Beebe's projects include Lake Mead Membrane
Water Treatment Plant in Arizona, Alamosa Arsenic Removal
Project and the La Junta Water Treatment Plant.

Glacier and CDM Engineers Receive National
Safety Awards
The Associated General Contractors of America recognized
the outstanding safety programs of contractors across the
country during the fourth annual AGC/Willis Construction Safety
Excellence Awards Breakfast at the 84th Annual AGC Convention.
The program examines each contractor's commitment and approach
to safety and health as well as their statistical results
for the year. Special attention is given to the contractor's
safety training program, active employee involvement, evidence
of management commitment and innovation.
To be a finalist, contractors had to achieve zero work site
fatalities and zero multi-catastrophic injuries. They presented
their safety programs to an independent panel of judges consisting
of owner representatives, federal/state OSHA administrators
and insurance brokers. Awards were presented only to those
contractors that exceeded the program criteria.
The Construction Safety Excellence Award
winners from Colorado included:

HDR Receives Employer of the Year Recognition
The Denver office of HDR was recently recognized by the Colorado
chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar as Employer
of the Year in Colorado. The award was given to the organization
that most profoundly enhanced the transportation industry
through its commitment to excellence and quality in its services
or products; encourages continuing education of its employees;

its Women's Forum. This internal forum focuses on providing
an informal setting for networking and mentoring and offers
opportunities for professional development.
Founded in 1977, WTS was created through the efforts of 40
women involved in transportation in the Washington, D.C. area.
They sought a means to enhance professional and personal involvement
of women in the field of transportation. The Colorado chapter
was founded in 1997 by a group of women in the local transportation
community. Since its inception, the Colorado chapter has grown
to more than 100 members.
Design Workshop Recognized for Design
of Veterans Memorial Cemetery
The United Veterans Committee of Colorado presented Design
Workshop Inc., with a Distinguished Achievement Award in Landscape
Architectural Excellence at its 31st annual awards banquet
on April 13 in Denver.
The Distinguished Achievement Award was presented to Design
Workshop "in recognition and appreciation of their professionalism,
expertise and skill in the landscape design and layout of
the beautiful and serene Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Grand
Junction." Lead consultant, TSP Five Architects, was
also recognized for its contribution to the project.
After more than a decade of effort, western Colorado veterans
groups successfully lobbied the state legislature for funds
to support the planning and design of a new military cemetery
in Grand Junction. Design Workshop was engaged in 1999 to
assist in the selection of a 20-acre site, lead in the master
planning of the cemetery and design all site and landscape
elements.
To express the dignity and pride of military service, formal
rows of shade trees transect the grounds, creating a sense
of order and spatial hierarchy. Traffic and incompatible uses,
such as the Union Pacific railroad service yard, are separated
by broad, grassy berms, creating a tranquil and contemplative
atmosphere.
The local landscape character is accentuated by a natural
stream. The visitor center, ceremonial assembly area, columbaria
and shelter for committal services are all oriented to the
stream and to views of Mt. Garfield to the northeast and the
Colorado National Monument to the southwest.
