Governor Honors Merrick & Co./ Meurer Merges with Kennedy/Jenks/Mortenson Awarded Two Fort Carson Contracts

Merrick & Co. Earns
Exporting Excellence Award

Merrick & Co. in Aurora received the Governor's Award for Excellence in Exporting, which recognizes Colorado companies that have made outstanding contributions to exporting during the past year.

Merrick was among four companies to receive the award at Colorado's 27th Annual World Trade Day Conference in May. Merrick was recognized for establishing subsidiary offices in Guadalajara, Mexico, and in Ottawa, Canada, as well as for having successful projects in Malaysia, Australia and Colombia. The company's nearly $5.5 million in export revenues over the past year were for professional services.


Heath Wins Three National
‘Building of the Year’ Awards

Heath Construction in Fort Collins received three national Building of the Year awards from Chief Buildings, an international supplier of metal-building systems for commercial and industrial use. They were:

 • “Educational Facility of the Year Award” for the Thomas M. McKee 4-H Youth and Community Building at the Larimer County Fairgrounds in Loveland. Heath furnished and erected the 26,000-sq-ft structure in conjunction with Hensel Phelps Construction Co.

 • Manufacturing and Industrial Facility of the Year Award for the 10,000-sq-ft Colorado Microcircuits facility in Loveland. Heath furnished all materials for the project, built by Clark Construction Co.

 • Overall Building of the Year Award for the 85,000-sq-ft Furniture Row retail facility along Interstate 25 in Dacono. Heath supported the design team, supplied the entire building package and erected the facility in conjunction with Taylor Kohrs.


Meurer & Associates Merges
with Kennedy-Jenks Consultants

Two consulting engineering practices—Meurer & Associates of Denver and San Francisco-based Kennedy-Jenks Consultants—merged in June.

The Meurer staff will continue to serve existing Denver area clients as Meurer & Associates, a division of Kennedy/Jenks Consultants. The combined staff will total 560.

Meurer & Associates has provided water, wastewater and recycled water consulting services to municipalities, utility districts and private clients in metropolitan Denver and Colorado since 1978.

Founded in 1919, Kennedy/Jenks Consultants has 23 offices throughout the western United States.


Hensel Phelps, Fentress Bradburn
Selected for $92.8M Building

Denver's Fentress Bradburn Architects and Hensel Phelps Construction Co. of Greeley were awarded a $92.8-million contract to design and build a six-story, 250,000-gross-sq-ft downtown headquarters for the San Joaquin County government in California.

The two firms have together completed more than 50 projects valued at more than $3.4 billion. Their portfolio includes the LEED EB platinum-certified California Department of Education Headquarters in Sacramento, City of Oakland Administration Buildings and the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.


Mortenson Awarded Two
Contracts at Fort Carson

M. A. Mortenson Co. was awarded two  contracts totaling more than $96 million,at the Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs.

Work began in February on a $64-million contract for the design and construction of six company operation facilities. A second contract was awarded for the design and construction of three tactical equipment maintenance facilities, which will begin construction in September.

The company operations facilities is a 400,000-sq-ft, six-building complex designed and constructed to meet LEED-silver standards.

The second contract is a $32.8-million Single Award Task Order Contract as part of a unique contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It allows the Corps to add new task orders for building construction up to a total value of $200 million over a period of three years. 

The first task order is to design and construct a 136,400-sq-ft, three-building TEMF that will also be designed and constructed to LEED-silver standards. TEMF buildings provide maintenance space for tanks and other heavy equipment the battalion combat team uses in completing their missions.

The Minneapolis firm of Leo A. Daly will serve as Mortenson's design partner for both contracts.


Taylor Kohrs to Build 24th
Street Townhomes in Denver

Denver’s Taylor Kohrs was selected to build the 24th Street Townhomes project in downtown Denver.

The project is being developed by Century Real Estate and is part of the Welton Place Development, which upon completion, will include 170 condos and townhomes, as well as retail space. It will include 11 three-story residences with two- and three-bedroom options. Construction is scheduled for completion by the first of the year.


RNL Will Design 'Green' Bus
Facility for South Bend Agency

RNL of Denver will design a new $14-million, 160,000-sq-ft bus operations and maintenance facility to serve the growing public transit needs in South Bend, Ind.

Other team members include Forum Architects LLC and Maintenance Design Group.

Design for the new facility will incorporate sustainable design and construction strategies that will result in energy-efficient building systems and a healthy work environment for employees and visitors. The project will be designed to meet LEED-silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is scheduled for completion in 2009.


Atlas Construction Supply
Opens for Business in Denver

San Diego-based Atlas Construction Supply Inc. has opened a store at 4800 Race St. in Denver.

The company's fifth location, the new store will expand Atlas’ ability to supply and provide services to general contractors and concrete contractors in the region, Atlas officials say.

Atlas Construction Supply specializes in concrete forming systems and concrete accessories, including the Atlas Tech concrete chemical and repair product line, A-PLY forming plywood, rebar supports, decorative concrete systems, residential foundation products, tilt-up and precast products, light wall forming.

It will expand into supplying heavy forming and shoring systems later this year. Ray Breer is the manager of the new facility.


Salida’s Ecobuilders Earns
Certification Through Farmenergy

Ecobuilders LLC of Salida has earned certification from Rural America's clean-energy solutions expert, Farmenergy.

Farmenergy's mission is to identify and certify a network of qualified installers who understand the specific needs of farmers, ranchers and rural homeowners. 


CH2M Hill, GE to Build Largest
Gas-Fired Power Plant in Australia

A CH2M Hill and GE Energy consortium will serve as the engineer, procurement and construction contractor for Australian-based Origin Energy’s new 630-mw Darling Downs Power Station in Queensland, Australia.

CH2M Hill and GE will design and construct the $660-million project, which will operate from single-fuel plant firing coal seam methane gas and use an air-cooled condenser for the plant’s primary cooling system. 

CH2M Hill will perform the engineering, design and procurement of the offshore “balance of plant” equipment for the project, integrating with three GE-supplied Frame 9E gas turbine generators, a C7 steam turbine generator and three heat-recovery steam generators.

CH2M Hill will partner with Laing O'Rourke Australia for the site execution of the project works, as well as supplying equipment, components and materials through the company's Australian Industry Participation Plan.

Plant construction is expected to begin this month, commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2009, and ramping up of full commercial operation in the first quarter of 2010.


Alliance Awarded 'Cornerstone'
Project at St. Francis Center

Alliance Construction Solutions of Loveland has been awarded the contract for construction of the Cornerstone Building for the St. Francis Center transitional housing at Park Avenue West and Curtis streets in Denver.

VanTilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh of Denver is the architect. The budget has not been finalized, but construction on the 10-month project will begin next spring.

The Cornerstone Building—developed by Rocky Mountain HDC and the St. Francis Center—will provide temporary housing for homeless singles, couples and families.
