ACEC-CO Raises Money for Denver Zoo/AGC Colorado

Members Receive National Safety Awards/SMPS Announces Marketing Excellence Award Winners

Engineering Council Raises $19,000 for Denver Zoo Project

The American Council of Engineering Cos. of Colorado raised $19,000 at its “Engineers Gone Wild” members evening at the Denver Zoo to support Asian Tropics, the zoo’s next major project.

The total contribution will be more than $38,000 because of a dollar-for-dollar match provided by a zoo improvement bond approved by voters in 1999.

Designed as an environmentally conscious, sustainable animal exhibit, Asian Tropics may become the first major animal exhibit complex to be LEED certified. The project will incorporate a variety of sustainable features such as the use of recycled water, efficient HVAC systems and natural daylighting and ventilation.

The zoo will also utilize a biomass gasification system, which will heat and power portions of the Asian Tropics exhibit by converting zoo animal waste and the trash left by 1.7 million visitors annually into usable energy implemented through engineering innovations.

When complete, the 10-acre exhibit will serve as a conservation center and house highly endangered Asian species, including elephants, Indian rhinos and Malayan tapirs.

The zoo plans to break ground on the Asian Tropics project in 2009, with completion in 2011.

CSU Construction Management Dept. Honors Endowed Chair Donors

Industry members recently gathered at Colorado State University to recognize lead contributors to the Heavy Construction Management Endowed Chair, a permanent faculty position in the Dept. of Construction Management.

The first phase of the two-phase plan is to pass the $1.5-million mark, with the longer-term goal of reaching a $3-million endowment.

A reception highlighted two of the lead donors: Colorado Contractors Association of Denver, and Connell Resources of Fort Collins. Both have completed $250,000 pledges.

Recognition and thanks were also given to milestone donors, including Rocky Mountain Cement Council, Asphalt Paving Co., LaFarge, Premier Paving, United Cos. and Coulson Excavating.

When the first-phase endowment funds are secured, the department will hire a professor and supplement the position. In addition, the department will add an additional asphalt materials course for fall semester.
