Twenty Ninth Street is a cornerstone project for the city
of Boulder, mixing retail, restaurants and entertainment into
a outdoor, pedestrian-friendly district expected to drive
economic prosperity to an area where the dated Crossroads
Mall once stood.
The project reflects the community's commitment to a clean
environment through the design and construction of a high-performance,
sustainable retail campus. Approximately 80 percent of the
inert building materials, including more than 2,000 tons of
steel, were recycled from the old mall when it was demolished.
And the new space itself is a prime example of sustainable
design. Anchor store Wild Oats, a LEED-certified building,
and the overall center will include sustainable buildings.
A variety of "green" programs and procedures were
incorporated throughout construction. These include installing
and maintaining erosion-control measures, purchasing materials
that have been manufactured by recycled stock, reusing materials,
using local materials and equipment, as well as creating and
implementing an indoor air-quality program.
The new facility will also have 25 parking spaces for hybrid
cars and at least 200 bicycle parking spaces, plus electric
car and re-charging stations. More than 200,000 brick pavers,
a cooler surface than asphalt, cover the development, and
more than 50 percent of the parking will be underground to
reduce the heat-island effect.
