SBEC volunteers spent the day framing, roofing and siding three homes that will be occupied by three different families who put in 250-500 hours of sweat-equity to help build their own homes, as well as the homes of other Habitat families.
For some SBEC team members, this was their second or third Habitat for Humanity house-build.
“This volunteer project was a great way for our team to give back to the community,” said Gary Shaffer, SBEC principal and vice president. “It allowed us the opportunity to get involved as a team, and we had a great time doing it.”
One of the families, the Yanez-Coronado family, will finally have enough space for their four children. They have lived in Denver most of their lives and struggled to find decent and affordable housing. Martha and Eladio Yanez-Coronado are already hard at work on their sweat-equity hours and both enjoy working side by side with other volunteers and family members.
“We appreciate people taking the time to come out and help us. It feels good to know that people are happy to come out and help us build our home,” Martha said.
Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver has built more than 320 homes in the Denver area since its inception in 1979, housing over 1,250 people. Shaffer • Baucom volunteers helped construct what will be one of over 30 houses completed in 2008. Worldwide, Habitat for Humanity has more than 2,300 local affiliates, state support organizations and national organizations in nearly 90 countries.
Completing a home somewhere in the world every 10 minutes, Habitat builds nearly 26,000 homes per year around the world.
“I think it shows a lot about a team to give up their entire day to help make someone else’s day brighter,” said Ellie Dugle, SBEC’s office manager. “We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with volunteers who help out every week. That is an enormous and impressive commitment, and we were honored to work with such a group of people.”
SBEC team members are already in the process of planning another house-build event for the company, and they plan on making it an annual team event.
